2003 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS


The Chinese American Citizens Alliance - Salinas Chapter in conjunction with The Chinese Association of Salinas annually award scholarships to deserving graduating high school students of Chinese descent in Monterey County who will be attending a post secondary accredited trade school, junior or community college, or four year college or university. Currently, the maximum amount per scholarship is $500.00. Eligible are all high schools in the Monterey County, California. The scholarship is awarded based on scholarship, community service, service to the Chinese community, extra-curricular activities, need, and personal goals.

THE FOLLOWING APPLICANTS WERE AWARDED $500 SCHOLARSHIPS


DEANNA CHAN - Stevenson School

Daughter of active members Esmond and Clara Chan. Deanna will be attending Tufts University in the Fall. Tufts is also her father's alma Mater. She wishes to follow in her father's footstep, that of a doctor. Like her brother, who also received a scholarship from the Alliance/Chinese Association, she is an accomplished musician, playing flute & saxaphone in the school band & is a member in the school Coral Society. Outside of her school activities, she has been selected to attend Girls State, & is President of the Interact club. She graduated with a 3.95 grade point average.


ANA TAM - Salinas High School

Daughter of Andrew & Mary Tam. She plans to attend Hartnell College in the fall, majoring in Computer Graphic design. She belongs to Key Club, President of Students for a Better Earth, National Honor Society volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She graduated with a 3.90 grade point average.


ANDREW SHING - Monterey High School

Andrew, son of Man-Tak & Dawn Shing, will be attending UCLA in the fall, and studying Chemical Engineering. He is pianist at the Salinas Chinese Christian Church. He is on the school varity Wresting & Volleyball team. Belongs to National Horor Society, & California Scholarship Federation. Earned Eagle Scout pin in Boy Scouts of America. He graduated with a 4.26 grade point average.


JANETTE SHUGART - Monterey High School

Janette is the daughter of Chistopher & Susan Shugart. Active in theatre groups, & school band. Member of National Honor Society, Golden Club member, B of A award in drama.. Photo club President, Dance Captain, choreographer & Props manager for school theatre. Her grade point average is 3.95.


MICHELLE BANDY - North Salinas High School

Michelle is a daughtrer of Jeffrey & Joanna Bandy. Co-valedictorian at North High, Michelle is active in her Church activities at First Baptist Church. She is on the varsity swimming team & was Most Valuable on the team. She participates in the school marching band playing first chair & section leader. President of Advanced Placement Student Association , Treasurer of Earth Club,Secretary of Otaku Club. Member of California Scholarship Federation, & National Honor Society, Governor's Scholar, Golden State Awards in Biology, Chemistry, Physics & English. She will attend Cal Poly SLO in the fall majoring in Electrical Enginerring. Her grade point average is 4.31.
