2002 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS


The Chinese American Citizens Alliance - Salinas Chapter in conjunction with The Chinese Association of Salinas annually award up to six (6) scholarships to deserving graduating high school students of Chinese descent in Monterey County who will be attending a post secondary accredited trade school, junior or community college, or four year college or university. Currently, the maximum amount per scholarship is $500.00. Eligible are all high schools in the Monterey County, California. The scholarship is awarded based on scholarship, community service, service to the Chinese community, extra-curricular activities, need, and personal goals.

MICHAEL CHAN - Stevenson School
1128 Orinda Way, Salinas, CA 93901

Son of active members Esmond and Clara Chan. Michael will be attending Yale University in the Fall. An accomplished musician, Michael was involved with the Stevenson band, orchestra and jazz band. He also served as accompanist as well as composer for Stevensonıs chorus and musicals. During his musical career, Michael has been chosen as an honor band member for several California music organizations. Michael is graduating with a 4.14 GPA. He is described as a leader and role model for his classmates. His biggest accomplishment may be his ability to fold a single piece of paper into the shape of a monkey that can clap its hands!.


SEAN CHAN - Stevenson School

Son of Mr. And Mrs. Sun Chan of Hong Kong, Sean is a boarding student at Stevenson. Seanıs primary interests are music and basketball. He has studied cello since age 6, earning a position in many honor orchestras from Montereyıs Youth Orchestra to the National Festival Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Seanıs passion for table tennis drove him to start a table tennis club at Stevenson. He plans to attend UC Berkeley in the Fall.


NICOLA FUNG - Salinas High School
1201 San Angelo Dr., Salinas, CA 93901

Nicola, the daughter of Albert and Pat Fung, will be the Salinas High School valedictorian, graduating with a 4.39 GPA. She plans to use her math and science skills and interest to study engineering. Nicolaıs athletic skills during high school were shown in track & field and cross country participation as well as on the soccer team. Her leadership skills include serving on the boards of the schoolıs Key, Chemistry, Soccer and Cross-country/Track Clubs. In the community, Nicola has been involved with Meals on Wheels and Shelter Plus ­ she has also helped at the annual Chinese Luncheon. Nicola plans to attend U.C. Berkeley or UCLA in the Fall.


CINDY LAU - Everett Alvarez High School

Cindy is the daughter of David Lau. Cindy will be the Alvarez High class valedictorian, graduating with a 4.40 GPA. While maintaining an excellent academic record, she has been a very active high school student. She was on the school cross country and tennis teams (#1 doubles team) and was also a board member for the student body, the Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation. In addition, Cindy has served the community of Salinas by volunteering over 240 hours at Natividad Hospital and as a volunteer tutor at the public library. Cindy plans to attend UC Berkeley in the Fall.


LISA UEMURA - Salinas High School
1140 San Angelo Dr., Salinas, CA 93901

Lisa is the daughter of very active members Arlene and Bob Uemura. Lisa will be graduating from Salinas High School with a 4.35 GPA. She has been able to maintain her excellent academic record while also being involved in many extracurricular activities, including sports, volunteer work and part-time employment. Lisa has been MVP for both school volleyball and basketball teams, but her biggest athletic achievement is her seven-time Junior National Judo champion status. She has served over 300 hours for Memorial Hospitalıs service league, worked at the local soup kitchen and has always been ready to work at the Annual Chinese Luncheon. Her leadership skills are shown by her serving as volleyball and basketball team captains for several seasons and by her membership on the boards of the Salinas High National Honor Society and Rotary Interact clubs. Lisa will be attending UC San Diego in the Fall.


DEBRA WONG - Everett Alvarez High School

Debra is the daughter of Mark and Bonnie Wong of Salinas. She will be graduating with a 4.35 GPA and plans to attend U.C. Berkeley in the Fall. In addition to classes at Alvarez, Debra has taken classes at North Salinas High and Hartnell College in order to take the most challenging classes available as she prepared herself for college. Debra has also been a member of the Alvarez tennis (#2 singles) and swim teams. Her leadership abilities are shown by her serving as tennis team captain, president of the freshman class, and by serving on the boards of the National Honor Society (2 years as president), Key Club (president, vice-president and treasurer) and the Art AP Club (president). She has volunteered with Special Olympics and the PAL tennis program. In addition to studying, doing sports, and volunteering, Debra still has time to for part-time employment. She has been described as a young lady willing to work hard to achieve as a leader both academically and in her community.
