The mission of the Salinas Chinese School shall be to effectively teach its students
to foster an awareness and appreciation for the depth, diversity and cultural heritage of the Chinese
language, customs and traditions through instruction and participation in structured school and
Salinas Chinese School provides quality Mandarin Chinese linguistic and cultural education to young
people in the Chinese community, ages 5 through 18. The school is currently providing four levels of
classes. School is held on Saturdays from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., September through May, at the
Chinese Association located at 1 California Street, Salinas.
All teachers are experienced and passionate about Chinese teaching. While the school used bilingual
teaching approach in the past, immersion or near-immersion teaching approach will be implemented
this school year (2014-2015). Students will develop the four language skills of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Classes will also incorporate the five c's Communication, Culture, Connections,
Comparisons, and Communities to help students build proficiency in using Chinese language
linguistically and culturally.
Presentations will be held on/around traditional Chinese holidays, including holidays' origins, legends,
customs and traditions. The major Chinese traditional holidays include Chinese New Year, Lantern
Festival, Qing Ming Festival, Duan Wu Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Chong Yang Festival.
Students also have the opportunities to do various crafts throughout the year.
